Ramos STS looks at the risks of fentanyl
Fentanyl is creating high levels of concern due to its potency and the risks associated with its use which, even in small amounts can cause overdose and death. Law Enforcement Agencies, and healthcare and/or customs laboratory workers may face different scenarios, which require different Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) explains Ricardo Posada, KAM & Emergency Response Responsible, at Ramos STS, exhibiting company at the last edition of SICUR.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid 50-100 times stronger than morphine which is creating high levels of concern due to its potency and the risks associated with its use which, even in small amounts, can cause overdose and death. Law Enforcement Agencies, and healthcare and/or customs laboratory workers may face different scenarios: from the care of a person to operations in laboratories where this drug is processed. The protection requirements are therefore not the same, and the PPE to be used depends on the mode of exposure.
Thus, Ricardo Posada, KAM & Emergency Response Responsible, at Ramos STS, explains “if fentanyl is present in a small volume in powder or tablet form, a Type 4 protective suit combined with disposable gloves made from nitrile combined with other compounds and properly sealed to the suit with a CBRN protective tape would be advisable, whereas if it is in liquid form or in large quantities, then a Type 3 protective suit should be considered together with nitrile gloves thicker than disposable gloves that are also properly sealed to the protective suit”.
Airways must also be protected. Posada highlights that “in both solid and liquid form, the use of a FFP3 mask should be considered for minor operations; and for scenarios with a higher concentration, a half mask with P3 filters, combined with wrap-around safety goggles to protect the eyes; or a mask with built-in face shield and P3 filters. In specific circumstances the use of watertight suits and self-contained breathing apparatus may be necessary”.
